Preventing repeated rate requests

Limit repeated rate requests coming from the same delivery address.

Written by Veno Herceg

Zapiet - Rates by Distance can limit how many rate requests it accepts from the same delivery address. This is useful if your store is targeted by a bot or automated script that requests rates for a single address over and over, which inflates your usage charges.

Throttling is turned off by default. If you would like it enabled, please contact our team on chat.

How throttling works

Throttling is applied per delivery address. There are two limits:

  • Per-minute limit: the number of rate requests accepted for one address within a minute. The default is 30.

  • Per-day limit: the total number of rate requests accepted for one address within a day. The default is 300.

The per-minute limit catches rapid, repeated requests. The per-day limit catches slower activity that stays under the per-minute limit but still builds up over the course of a day.

Both limits are configurable, so they can be raised or lowered to suit your store.

What your customers see

Genuine customers are not affected, as a real shopper will not come close to either limit.

When an address does reach a limit, the app returns the last rate calculated for that address instead of calculating a new one. A shipping rate is always shown at checkout, so no one is prevented from placing an order.

Billing

Throttled requests are not counted as billable rate calculations.

Once an address reaches a limit, the extra requests do not add to your usage.

Requesting throttling for your store

Throttling is not enabled automatically. If you are seeing unusual rate request activity on the Logs page, or a spike in usage you cannot account for, let us know at [email protected] or via chat, and we will enable it for your store and set the limits with you.
