Exceptions

Written by Clemency Farmer

Zapiet - Rates by Distance has a feature that allows you to create exceptions for specific addresses, postal codes, or cities.

This can be useful if you want to offer a special rate to regular customers or a specific area. It can also be used if an area you deliver to consistently returns an incorrect address, allowing you to override the distance calculation.

Requirements

  • The Carrier Service API is required when using Zapiet - Rates by Distance, in order to show the rates in the checkout. You can learn more in our Shopify Carrier API guide.

Create a rate exception

This exception can be used if you have a regular customer and would like to offer them a discounted or free delivery rate.

It can also be used to apply a special rate to a specific postal code or city.

  1. In Zapiet - Rates by Distance, click Exceptions.

  2. Click Create exception.

  3. Add the Exception name.

  4. Select the location for this exception. It will apply when the delivery comes from this location.

  5. Choose the Status of this exception. If you want this exception to be active, select Enabled. If you need to turn it off temporarily but don't want to delete it, select Disabled.

  6. Choose where this exception will apply. You can choose from:

    • Specific address

    • Postal code

    • City

  7. Fill in the address fields for the exception.

  8. Select Change delivery price and enter the delivery price customers in this exception area will see.

  9. Add a Rate name and Rate description, if needed.

  10. Click Save.

The exception has now been created. Repeat this process to add other exceptions if needed.

Where exceptions overlap, a specific address takes priority, followed by postal code, then city.

Create a distance exception

This exception can be used if a customer's address is in a remote area where the distance is calculated incorrectly, or if the location falls outside your delivery radius despite being within an area you serve.

  8. Select Make a distance exception and enter the correct distance for this area.

  9. Add a Rate name and Rate description, if needed.

  10. Click Save.

The exception has now been created. Repeat this process to add other exceptions if needed. Where exceptions overlap, a specific address takes priority, followed by postal code, then city.

Test the exception

Make sure the address at the checkout exactly matches the one added in Zapiet - Rates by Distance.

  1. Add an item to the cart, and proceed to the checkout.

  2. Enter delivery details according to added exception.

  3. Check the displayed rate.

When a customer places an order, you will be able to see it in the Zapiet - Rates by Distance logs.

Notes

  • Where exceptions overlap, a specific address takes priority, followed by postal code, then city.
