Smart logic: Conditional activation

Use conditional rules to show or hide fields based on customer choices

A great shopping experience feels like a conversation. If a customer says they don't want gift wrapping, they shouldn't be asked what color ribbon they want.

Conditional activation allows you to build "smart" forms that only show relevant fields. This reduces friction, speeds up the checkout process, and makes your store feel much more professional.

Step 1: Identify your "trigger" and "target"

To set up logic, you need at least two options within the same group:

  • The trigger: The choice the customer makes first (e.g., "Add a gift message?").

  • The target: The field that appears or disappears (e.g., the "Message" text box).

Step 2: Set the logic rules

  1. Open the Option group you want to edit.

  2. Click on the Target option (the one you want to hide or show).

  3. Look for the Conditional activation section and click Enable.

  4. Define your rule:

    • Show this field if: Select this if you want the field to be hidden by default and only appear when a specific choice is made.

    • Hide this field if: Select this if you want the field visible unless a specific choice is made.

  5. Set the condition (e.g., "Show this field if 'Add a Gift Wrap' equals 'Yes'").

  6. Click Save.

Step 3: Test the flow

Go to your storefront and walk through the selection process:

  • Does the target field stay hidden initially?

  • Does it appear instantly when you click the trigger?

  • If you change your mind and uncheck the trigger, does the target field disappear?

Note: Conditional activation is currently a storefront-only feature. It is not supported on the Shopify POS interface, so all options will remain visible for staff members using the POS app.

Success check

  • Logical flow: Your product page should now feel dynamic. If you have complex products (like a custom wedding cake), you can chain these rules so that Step 2 only appears after Step 1 is finished.

  • Clean look: Your product page is no longer a wall of empty text boxes!

Next Step: Now that your customer journey is perfect, let’s make sure your backend is just as organized. In Full Circle: Notifications and Printing, we’ll show you how to ensure all these custom details end up on your packing slips and in your customer's inbox.
